If you are far from your loved one and must make critical healthcare decisions for them, this article simplifies the process for you and helps you to focus on what to do next. Hiring and managing a long-distance caregiver can be challenging unless specific procedures are followed.
Long-distance care management tips
- DATA COLLECTION - Gather as much knowledge as possible about your loved one's health, medical and physical therapy treatments, overall condition, and local caregiving resources. Talk with their closest contacts, friends, family, and support system allies.
- REFERRALS - Seek referrals from quality sources. Before interviewing potential caregivers by phone or Zoom, know and write down your minimum performance and attitude standards. Although competency is your first employment qualification box to check, personality does count. Different personal styles express different levels of empathy. The preferred ideal combination is someone highly competent and accountable and a kind, caring person who engages with others well. Trust your gut instincts when your read people.
- WRITTEN GOALS get achieved. Organize important paperwork using my free "Personal Priority Planner."
- AUTHORIZATIONS - Provide written authorization for your primary caregiver to have access to and receive medical and financial information. Research good templates to customize. Create a special folder for all related correspondence. This can be done in your mail account and with hard copy.
- CONTACT CALENDAR - Plan a fixed frequency of routine check-in calls and length of calls. Where will you list the agenda items and decisions made in those conversations? I include agenda notes in my calendar. How much notice do you want when your long-distance caregiver has a time conflict? Unexpected things do happen to all of us sometimes.
- CONNECTION OPTIONS – There are multiplicative options for staying in touch, from simple phone calls to digital systems. Facebook Messenger is available on an inexpensive voice-activated Portal device. There are many other platforms to consider as well.
- REPORTS - Stay connected. Verify report details. What do you know when? How will emergencies be handled?
- MEDICAID/MEDICARE - Consider Medicaid/Medicare caregiver training and compensation. Check for Medicaid/Medicare dual-eligible health plans that may provide extra benefits.
- FLEXIBILITY - Caregivers are human and can have 'off' days if they are experiencing personal problems at home. Ask them for open disclosure about what is happening with them, so you can be supportive and clarify your expectations about possible 'what if' scenarios.
- PRAISE – Remember to express gratitude for their work which can sometimes be frustrating. In a tear-down media world where conflict is more often publicized than the wonderful good things occurring across the globe, such as the 2022 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, which holds hope of drastically improving treatment outcomes for major medical illnesses and reducing drug costs.
